With reference to the Estimates for 1906, I
have the honour to remind you that on the 30th. day of March,
1904, 1 addressed you applying for an increase of salary on the
understanding that I was to provide a fully qualified Assistant
whose services would be at the disposal of the Government when
-ever required, and I pointed out the impossibility of discharg-
-ing the duties of my office single-handed.

On the 6th. April, 1904, the Acting Colonial
Secretary was good enough to inform me that you, as Officer
Administering the Government, were prepared to recommend my
request for the Secretary of State's approval on certain condi-
-tions, to which I agreed.

The Secretary of State, however stated
(0.0.0.176 of 3rd. June, 1904) that in view of the fact that an
additional allowance had been given to me for clerical expenses
and that a bonus of $3,000 had been granted to me in considera-
-tion of my work in connection with the Land Court, he regretted
that he was unable to approve the proposed increase to my
